The Pennsylvania Convention Center is a multi-use public facility in the Market East section of Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. , It is one of the largest convention centers in the country , designed to accommodate conventions, exhibitions, conferences, trade shows and other business and entertainment events. The "L"-shaped complex occupies four city blocks. The expanded Pennsylvania Convention Center is one of the country’s premier meeting facilities. The Pennsylvania Convention Center offers more than 1 million square-feet of saleable meeting spaces, one of the largest ballrooms in the Northeast, and welcoming lounges within a flexible and dynamic venue.

History

In the latter part of the 20th century, the Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center became outmoded.

With the opening of the Spectrum in South Philadelphia, fewer big sporting and entertainment events used the Civic Center.

Political conventions, too, outgrew the capacity of the Civic Center to host them. By the 1980s, regional and state leaders had begun to plan for a new convention center in the heart of Center City.

It was decided that the former train shed of the Reading Terminal be the site of the new center and after renovations were finished by Wilson Brothers & Company, it opened in 1993. When it did, most of the events held in the Civic Center, including trade shows and the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, moved to the new facility. As a result of the construction of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Chinatown buildings located on Arch Street, up to the intersection of 13th Street, were demolished

There has been an expansion of a facility with significant increases in various parameters. The expansion involved the addition of a new hall, while one of the existing halls was removed, resulting in a total of seven halls. Additionally, the facility added 23 new meeting rooms, resulting in a total of 73 meeting rooms. The number of truck berths also increased by 17, bringing the new total to 45. The expansion also led to significant increases in the facility's main level exhibit hall space and street level exhibit hall space. Specifically, the main level exhibit hall space increased by 213,000 sq. ft. (19800 m2), while the street level exhibit hall space increased by 26,000 sq. ft. (2420 m2), resulting in a new total of 528,000 sq. ft. (49100 m2) and 151,000 sq. ft. (14000 m2), respectively. The facility also expanded its ballroom space by 55,400 sq. ft. (5150 m2), resulting in a new total of 87,000 sq. ft. (8080 m2). The meeting/banquet space remained the same at 123,000 sq. ft. (11400 m2), resulting in a new total of 246,000 sq. ft. (22900 m2). Overall, the expansion resulted in a significant increase in the facility's saleable space, with a new total of 1,000,000 sq. ft. (92900 m2), compared to the previous total of 624,000 sq. ft. (58000 m2). This expansion likely aimed to increase the facility's capacity to host larger and more diverse events, thereby generating more revenue and attracting more attendees.

Art & Design

Impressive. Striking. Modern. These are the words to describe the building, which has been recognized by the architectural firm Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates (TVS) and opened in 1993. The ultra-modern structure features a soaring staircase, towering glass walls and smooth granite floors. Its $4 million public art collection combines sculpture, paintings and photography. With more than 130 pieces by 93 different artists, it is the largest public collection of art in outside of a museum. The center features a modern design that blends steel, glass, and stone to create a dynamic and impressive structure. One of the most notable installations is "The Quest" by artist Warren Rohrer, a large mural made of tiles that features a vibrant abstract landscape. The center also has a collection of murals by local artists that depict Philadelphia's history and culture.
